Promoting sustainable fair trade and
weaving a tapestry of opportunity in Guatemala

Our Savior’s Lutheran provides a scholarship for a girl in Guatemala.

Enjoy this letter from her that arrived in late November:

October  2017

Dear Sponsors:

I send you cordial greetings with my whole heart.  I wish you many blessings in your work and in all that you do daily.  I ask God to bless your work.  Thank you for giving me a scholarship this year, because thanks to it, I was able to go to school.

In August, I had a lot of fun at school with my friends.  We always play during recess, and we did a lot of group work for presentations.  At home, my family and I are very happy.  I thank God for allowing me to be with them.  September was a little bit sad, because my grandmother was ill.  I am always with her, because my aunt and uncle don’t have a lot of time to take care of her, so I am in charge of her medicine.  She is still sick, but I hope that she gets better soon.  I am also taking care of my younger sister and helping out with the work around the house.  I didn’t go to classes much this month because I was sad.  I was remembering the death of my parents.  Also, there were some kids at school who were making fun of me.

On September 14th, my classmates went to bring back the symbolic torch.  I didn’t go because I wasn’t allowed to.  My aunt thought that the trip was too dangerous.  After the Independence Day celebrations, they gave us a day off from school.  Afterwards, we returned to classes.

October was really difficult for me, because I am remembering all of the things that I did with my parents.  On November 29th, it will be the one year anniversary of their murders.  We have finished classes, and I hope to pass fifth grade.  Next year I hope to get good grades.

I also wanted to tell you a little bit about my older sister.  She is in eighth grade.  She has passed her grade, and she is really nice to me.  Her and my uncle and aunt are very grateful for the scholarship that you have given me.  During my break, I am going to help my family by doing some embroidery and taking care of my younger sister.  I will be praying for all of you.

Goodbye.  May God bless you.

Until next time,

Magdalena Men Sojuel
