Dear Friends and Sponsors,

Greetings to you in the name of our risen Lord Jesus Christ!

Just as Easter corresponds with springtime in the U.S. (though I have heard that this year, spring has been very slow to arrive!), here in Cameroon, Easter comes around the time that the rainy season begins. Nature turns from brown, dry, and dusty to verdant green. Flowering trees and bushes blossom, and mangoes start to ripen. There are signs of new life all around, reminders of the new life that is ours in Christ.

We had a 10-day Easter break here at the Lutheran Institute of Theology, and are now on the “home stretch” of the second semester. After final exams and oral defenses of final papers, graduation ceremonies will be held on Sunday, June 24.

Soon after that, I will be heading back to the U.S. for “home assignment” during the months of July and August, during which I will be visiting my sponsoring congregations. I am eager to share with you how God has been at work here in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Cameroon and at the Lutheran Institute of Theology in Meiganga, where I teach New Testament and Greek.

I look forward to visiting as many of my 50+ sponsoring congregations as possible. However, the timeframe of my home assignment and the number of sponsoring congregations means that I obviously won’t be able to schedule every visit on a Sunday. I will try to give priority for Sundays to congregations I have not yet been able to visit on a Sunday. I hope that your congregation will also consider scheduling me for one of the following events which can happen during the week:

  • Weeknight or Saturday evening worship
  • A special mission event or international festival
  • A mission-oriented potluck/tea/other social gathering
  • Presentation for Vacation Bible School

Some of the ways in which I can serve you include:

  • Preaching during a worship service, highlighting what God is doing in Cameroon.
  • Doing a 20-30 minute Power Point presentation + Q & A time (this can be tailored to meet your needs) about life and mission in Cameroon.
  • Teaching something about the richness of the culture and people in Cameroon and particular customs or elements of church life.
  • Other ideas? I’m always open to ideas for how to share the story of God’s mission being lived out in Cameroon!

Availability: I will be generally available from July 5 to September 2, except for July 23-27, when I will attend the ELCA Summer Missionary Conference in Chicago.

Below is a list of my sponsoring congregations, organized by synod, and in the case of SW Minnesota, by regions within the synod. If it is at all possible to coordinate some of the visits together with parishes in the same area, that would help save time and diminish costs of the visit.

Costs: Because the costs vary for travel to different areas, the most equitable way to manage expenses is to divide the total cost among all the congregations I visit. This fee will help offset my costs for car rental, fuel, lodging and meals on the road. I hope to travel with my husband and children, if they are able to obtain visas to come with me to the U.S. Depending on whether not they are able to come, I anticipate my costs to average somewhere around $250-350 per visit.

This figure will be tweaked when I know whether or not my family is able to travel with me, and when I know exactly which congregations I will visit and the extent to which I can combine visits. I will be in communication with you about the costs prior to finalizing arrangements.
