Gather October 2016

October 2017

Fall is officially here –cooler temperatures and turning colors. I hope you all are getting out to enjoy the beauty of God’s creation and the beautiful fall colors here in the Black Hills.

The WELCA Fall Salad Luncheon was held September 14.  The program was presented by all of the ladies from Our Savior’s who attended the Triennial convention in Minneapolis, in July.  There were challenges given to those in attendance as the call to action was given at the Triennial to love our neighbors with no exceptions.  Thanks to all the ladies who shared their experiences.  There was election and installation of Officers.  The officers elected to serve Our Savior’s WELCA were Vice President- Beverly Olheiser, Treasurer - Karol Johnson, Mission Growth -Janet Mattison, and Mission Community - Diane Rommen.   Those continuing as officers are President- Loretta Greni, Secretary -Diane Bryan, and Mary Goddard, Mission Action.

The Bear Butte Fall Women’s retreat was well attended.  The hostess of the retreat was St James Lutheran Church in Belle Fourche.  Dr. Cari Skogberg-Eastmen the guest speaker spoke on the topic “Who is my Neighbor.”  Her background and study focused on her research which she did on the border of Arizona and Mexico and her topic was on public reception and understanding of border and immigration issues.  She talked about facts vs. myths with immigration.  She used children’s books to help me to understand how I should be called to action.  The book titled Ordinary Mary’s Extraordinary Deed by Emily Pearson.  The theme of the book is about a little girl named Mary who helped 5 people than those 5 people helped 5 more people and then those 25 people each helped five more people and you get the picture- eventually the whole world was help all because ordinary Mary helped five people.  Sometimes we get overwhelmed thinking we can’t make it better but if we start who knows what the ripple effect may be.  The retreat was inspirational.  It will be a hard act to follow as we will host the retreat next year.

I want to remind everyone there are several ways to keep connected as Women of ELCA.  Locally, we have circle groups that meet monthly for fellowship and Bible study.

The Gather magazine has a monthly bible study and several articles that are tied to the bible study. OSLC monthly newsletter and website have information on dates and locations of WELCA activities and Bibles Studies.  Please check it out and come join us.

We are moving into preparing for Julefest.  The dates and times are set for Lefse making.  Look for the sign sheets in the fellowship hall and sign up.  There will be more sign ups later for other items we will be making for Julefest.  I would like to thank everyone in advance for all the work that each of you put into making the Julefest a huge success every year.  Stay tuned for more updates.
