Luther and the Reformation

Image result for painting of Martin Luther

Five hundred years ago, in 1517, Martin Luther kicked off the Reformation, which ultimately split Western European Christianity in two: Catholic and Protestant.

Throughout the Middle Ages, Europe was permeated and stabilized by one all-encompassing religion. But that world was rocked by fearless explorers, adventurous thinkers, and the new ideas of the Renaissance. One of these great minds belonged to a humble German monk named Martin Luther, who decided he could no longer stay silent about the corruption of his Church. Luther’s controversial teaching and preaching brought him into conflict with the heads of Church and State, leading to a dramatic showdown watched by all of Europe. This courageous stand by one man sparked a century of conflict – a war of words that eventually spiraled into actual war, changing Europe and Christianity forever, and continuing to the birth of our modern age.
